Laker Break

What to Discover or Recall . . .

Rather than using a single guard to advance the ball, the Laker Break in corporates two guard front.
It is comprised of three basic looks: Long, Short, and Middle.
This five player break will readily create outnumber situations. Therefore, players must be well adapt in attacking 2 on 1 and 3 on 2 situations.
Wings must run out wide.
Inbounders must be able to throw long, accurate outlet and inbounds passes.

Laker Break

Two Guard Front

| First Look (Long) | Second Look (Short) | Third Look (Middle) |

In the "Laker" break the ball is advanced quickly with teamwork rather than relying on a single point guard to advance the ball. In making an outlet pass after a defensive rebound or when inbounding the ball after a made shot, the first look is long, which immediately puts pressure on the defense to get back and protect the basket. The second look is short and the third look, usually against full court pressure, will be to the middle.

First Look: Long

When shot is made (or a missed shot is rebounded), the passer quickly looks to throw a long pass to either O3 or O4. If not available, the passer then looks short to either O1 or O2. All passes must be sharp and lead receivers. Whenever possible advance the ball with pass rather than dribble. ( Note: O1 and O2 as well as O4 and O5 are interchangeable positions.)

Deep Outlet to Right Side: O5 takes ball out and makes a deep inbound pass to O3. O3 looks to advance the ball to O4. If/when O3 cannot feed O4, O3 advances the ball on the dribble. O1 or O2 fills third lane and O5 is trails as a defensive safety.

Deep Outlet (Left): O5 takes ball out and makes a deep inbound pass to O4. O4 looks to advance the ball to O3. If/when O4 cannot feed O3, O4 advances the ball on the dribble. O1 or O2 fills third lane and O5 is defensive safety.

If O5 cannot inbound the ball long, O5 then looks to inbound the ball short.

Second Look Short
Diagonal Cut

Right Side Inbounds/Outlet Pass

O5 takes ball out and makes a short inbound pass to O2. O2 looks to feed O1 on the move making a diagonal cut. O3 and O4 fill right and left lanes respectively. O1 can pass ahead or advance the ball with a dribble. O2 and O5 trail.

Dribble Penetration

If/when O1 cannot feed O2 on diagonal cut, O1 advances the ball on the dribble. When O2 does not receive a pass from O1, O2 continues to the sideline ready to help out if O1 runs into problems. O3 and O4 turn out to wings or can cross under the basket if timing permits.

Pass Ahead Entry

When an outnumbered situatation does not develop, ballhandler O1 passes wing O4 initiating early flow offense.

Dribble Clear Entry

If wing O4 is overplayed, O4 back cuts to the basket and O1 executes a dribble clear entry into the early flow offense.

Pressure Release (Guard Help)

If O1 gets pressured by X1 or is double teamed, O2 pops back out to help. O1 passes back to O2 and makes a diagonal cut. O2 looks first to feed O1 on diagonal cut, and then to advance the ball on dribble into early offense.

Left Side Outlet/Inbounds Pass(Diagonal Cut)

O5 takes ball out and makes a short inbound pass to O2. O2 looks to feed O1 on the move making a diagonal cut. O3 and O4 fill right and left lanes respectively. O1 can pass ahead or advance the ball with a dribble. O2 and O5 trail.

Dribble Penetration

When O2 cannot feed O1 on diagonal cut, O2 advances the ball on the dribble. When O1 does not receive a pass from O2, O1 continues to the sideline ready to help out in case O2 runs into trouble or is double teamed. O3 and O4 turn out to wings or can cross under the basket if timing permits.

Pass Ahead Entry

When an outnumbered situatation does not develop, ballhandler O2 passes wing O3 initiating early flow offense.

Dribble Clear Entry

If wing O3 is overplayed, O3 back cuts to the basket and O2 executes a dribble clear entry into the early flow offense.

Pressure Release (Guard Help)

If/when O2 gets trapped by X1 or is double teamed, O1 pops back out to help. O2 passes back to O1 and makes a diagonal cut. O1 looks first to feed O2 on diagonal cut, and then to advance the ball on dribble into early offense.

Third Look Middle

When defenders X1 and X2 overplay and deny the short inbounds pass to O1 and O2, O4 doubles back and breaks into the middle for inbounds pass from O5. O1 and O2 then release and sprint towards the basket looking for a feed from O4. O3 assumes a baseline position on ball side.

Over the Top Pass Variation

When defenders X1 and X2 overplay and deny the short inbounds pass to O1 and O2, inbounder O5 looks long to O3 to O4. If O3 or O4 do not receive the long inbounds pass, they continue to the corners clearing out any backside help. O1 seals off defender X1 and O5 makes an "Over the Top" inbounds pass to O1.

O1 must maintain sealing off the defender until the ball is directly over head. After releasing and receiving the over the top pass O1 advances the ball on a hard dribble or kicks the ball ahead in attacking the out number situation. The over the top pass is a good option use after a time out.

Inverting Variation

When the defenders X1 and X2 face and deny O1 and O2 the inbounds pass, O1 and O2 release out to the long outlet positions on the break. O3 and O4 break back (INVERT) to the short inbounds positions. Inbounder O5 looks long to O1 or O2, then short to O3 or O4, and then to the middle if needed.

Middle Action Left

Attacking the Out Number Situation

Left Side Feed

When O4 receives the inbounds pass and feeds O2 on basket cut, O2 advances the ball on the dribble. O1 fills right lane and O3 assumes a baseline position on ball side. When O3 is located on the baseline behind the out numbered defenders, it makes it very difficult for them to make a defensive stop, and usually results in a wide open easy shot.

Right Side Feed

When O4 feeds O1 on basket cut, O1 advances the ball on the dribble. O2 fills the left lane and O3 assumes a baseline position on ball side. Since O3 is located on the baseline behind the out numbered defenders, it makes it very difficult for them to make a defensive stop, and usually ends up with a wide open easy shot situation.

Middle Action Right

Right Side Feed

When O3 receives the inbounds pass and feeds O1 on basket cut, O1 advances the ball on the dribble. O2 fills right lane and O4 assumes a baseline position on ball side. When O4 is located on the baseline behind the out numbered defenders, it makes it very difficult for them to make a defensive stop, and usually results in a wide open easy shot.

Left Side Feed

If O3 feeds O2 on basket cut, O2 advances the ball on the dribble. O1 fills the left lane and O4 assumes a baseline position on ball side. Since O4 is located on the baseline behind the out numbered defenders, it makes it very difficult for them to make a defensive stop, and usually ends up with a wide open easy shot situation.
